Fourth and Fifth Graders Play in Link Up with the Omaha Symphony
Fourth and fifth grade students from Holy Name School performed
with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra on their recorders at the Symphony’s annual
“Link Up” concert at the Holland Performing Arts Center.
Students prepared by learning to play recorder in their music classes as
part of their music curriculum and in preparation for the event.
Two students from fourth grade, Jade Martinez and Thomas Nyguen, were
chosen by their music teacher to perform on stage with the symphony during the
concert. Over 1000 students from schools across the Omaha metro participated in
the educational event. Students played many selections include “The Blue Danube
Waltz” by Strauss, Simple Melody, and Come to Play.

Opera Star Visits Music Classes
Opera star, Kevin Short, visited Holy Name music classes on March 28th and sang for Fifth Grade and Show Choir. Mr. Short is a bass-baritone and is visiting Omaha to sing the lead role of the Mikado, Emperor of Japan, in Opera Omaha's upcoming production of The Mikado. Mr. Short discussed opera in comparison to other music genres, and also sang excerpts from the show. Mr. Short answered many questions about opera and about his life and career. He has performed around the world, and his home is in Basel, Switzerland. The students were invited to the final dress rehearsal of the Mikado on April 11th at the Orpheum Theater. Holy Name School Presents "The Lion King" - Tuesday, May 8th, 2012, 7:00 p.m.
Holy Name Fifth through Eighth grade will present an adaptation of the musical, The Lion King, by Elton John and Tim Rice, on Tuesday May 8th, at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Students will be creating masks, painting the set, and learning songs, choreography and lines as part of their music curriculum in a unit on musical theater.
Holy Name Student Selected for UNO Middle School Honor Choir
Carson Sawyer, eighth grade, auditioned and was selected for the University of Nebraska Honor Choir. Only 100 students were chosen for this year’s festival. In preparation for the Festival,
students were expected to learn their choral pieces on their respective voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). Carson is a bass, and learned five choral pieces to prepare for the event.
The esteemed Vijay Singh, from Central Washington University, rehearsed
and conducted the choir. Singh is an internationally recognized composer, solo performer, and conductor. A public concert for parents and music lovers was performed by the choir at the conclusion of the day UNO’s Chamber Choir also performed at the concert.
Holy Name Students Sing with Nebraska All-State Children’s Chorus
Students from Holy Name Catholic School participated in the Nebraska All-State Children’s Chorus on November 17, 2011, at the Lied Center in Lincoln. Fourth Grader, Kenidy Dunlap, and Fifth Grader Christopher Stallworth III, spent the entire day in rehearsals under the direction of John Jacobsen. Fifth grader, Christopher Mitchell, was an alternate to the choir. Students were selected based on musicianship and character. Over 250 students participated from across the State, and were chosen from over 500 applicants. he choir and concert were in conjunction with the Nebraska Music Educator’s Association 75th Anniversary celebration.
