Keyboarding at Holy Name Thanks to Target and Berklee School of Music
Thanks to a grant from Target, Inc. the students of Holy Name will have the opportunity to learning keyboarding skills this year. In 2012, the 5th grade piloted the program. During the 2013-2014 school year, they continued their instruction and the new 5th grade bagan. As the program progresses, the entire Jr. High will be a part of this exciting program. Online instruction is included, by invitation from the Berklee School of Music, through a mini-lab in the music classroom.

Education should help children become the best people that they can be, whatever that may be for each individual child. Music is imperative to this process, as it helps us nurture our spiritual nature. The composer Zoltán Kodály said, “Music is a spiritual food for which there is no substitute.” Music helps students develop academically, socially, and individually. It helps foster self-discipline and builds self-confidence.
Music Class Goals: The essential objectives of music class are based on the National Standards of music education through the Kodály and Orff methods including:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. 2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. 3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments. 4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines. 5. Reading and notating music. 6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. 7. Evaluating music and music performances. 8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts. 9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
The students will have many performance opportunities such as participating in the Christmas program and spring musical, as well as show choir (upper grades), community and church activities, and additional school productions. We will study the music liturgy in class to prepare them for weekly Mass. I look forward to helping your children develop musically and academically this year.
